One album is entitled 'I Remember John Kirby' whose sextet figured prominently in the 30's and 40's, but he passed away a young man in Nice that Pell did a full album of Kirby's music. It gave me a chance to enjoy something I never would have heard otherwise/5(21).

A fine jazz tenor sax player (he also played clarinet later in his career), Dave Pell recorded frequently in the s and very early '60s. This two-disc set combines four of his LPs from this time period, 's The Dave Pell Octet Plays Irving Berlin, 's The Dave Pell Octet Plays Rodgers & Hart, 's The Old South Wails, and 's I Remember John Kirby, in a single package.

'The Dave Pell Octet Plays Rodgers & Hart'; 'The Dave Pell Octet Plays Irving Berlin'; 'I Remember John Kirby' and 'The Old South Wails'. 'A bright and fresh approach has been added to the wonderful music of Richard Rodgers' to quote the original liner notes to our first selection, 'The Dave Pell Octet Plays Rodgers & Hart'/5(12).

Dave Pell says that the first group he ever led was modelled on the John Kirby Sextet, and the second LP witnesses his devotion to the John Kirby methods. As the sleeve-note points out, "What Kirby did was put small band music on the same level of careful preparation and written organization as the big swing bands that then dominated the scene".

Dave Pell won considerable popularity by playing in colleges and for high school proms, concentrating on jazz which was suitable for dancing. The music was of high quality, thanks especially to the talented arrangers that Pell employed, including Bill Holman, Marty Paich, Shorty Rogers and Jack Montrose.
